Planning of Midnight at The Oasis (Toms visit)

Synopsis;

A clear distinction to reality and dream. Walking through the hotel Lola is told to hurry as she is late.She slams the door of her dressing room and she does a star with her name on is shown. Through the window we can see the sun changing into the moon mean while we see Lola touching up her make up in a traditional showgirl mirror. The song starts and all that can be seen is a spot light on a microphone where it is obvious a singer should be, her backing singers can be seen in the background looking round frantically for her. Then we see her run on and start to sing through the microphone so now the spot light is on her.

Chorus;

Reality, Camera pans around the audience who are dancing in couples drinking ect.

Verse;

Dream. The camera pans around her so that it is obvious she is in thought. The next shot we see of her is in the desert with her boyfriend looking at the moon, play fighting and kissing. The camera shoots from behind them to show them running into the hotel. As she enters the hotel the video is back into reality and we see that she is now the only person in the theatre. She realises she is alone and we see her walking slowly out of the hotel from behind like her boyfriend shot. Untill headlights are seen in the distance and you can see her silloutte coming out of the hotel doors until we see a reaction shot as she realises who is in the car. She runs over to the car gets in and the last shot is a close up of the couple from behind as they drive away in the car.

Tom's Visit

Day One of Toms Visit;

Our two day workshop with Tom was all about music videos (the planning of a music video, the different camera shots, and a bit of filming of our own music video)

We got given a song to listen to called Midnight at The Oasis. We got to listen to this song a couple of times and then was asked to write down our ideas and brainstorm ideas about how we felt about the song.

Day Two of Toms Visit;

On our second day we began filming our video of Midnight at the Oasis. We had some equipment (camera and lights) and have to improvise with props and locations. We used costumes from the drama centre at school and our location was the school. We got our actors and actresses for the music video from the schools sixth form centre. There was no cost at all during this filming and was a draft for the real thing later in the year.

We filmed for most of the day and looked back at the days filming in the last lessons of the day, we found that filming a video takes a lot of time and patience. I found that planning for a music video is essential and has to be done before filming as it would be impossible otherwise. Making a storyboard was good for our filming as it gave us a picture of what we wanted our shot to look like.

I would just like to say hankyou to Tom for our workshop and giving me a idea about just how IMPORTANT planning and re-search is to making a music video. Thanks tom!

Research on Music Videos

  • BBC -Top of the Pops (1975)
  • The Beatles made the first music video
  • Queen Music Video (Bohemien Rhapsody) - Lights from above onto the face's of the singer's (the beatles) - shadowed. Fading editing used (close-up to performance.) The clips change when the beat changes. Performace video. Focus on the instrumental (Gutiars, Pianos.) Only really two shots that fade between each other.
  • Beatles made promtional filsm specially for TV companies (1965)
  • Films where in black and white then to colour.
  • The Beatles; Hello Goodbye - Performace based, some close-ups but not many.

Analysing the Revolver ablum;

  • Black and White front (no colour at all)
  • Four main faces of the band (the beatles)
  • It looks at though it has been specifically drawn (sketches)
  • No pictures only drawing- cartoon like.
  • Faces of people we may not recongise expect for the main band.
  • Recongition of the band (the beatles)
  • Little pictures - close up's.

Lyrics to The Feeling - 'The Sun is Shining'

These are the song words that we have been able to use to create our music video. We also watched a short film of our teacher and three of her previous students go to meet The Feeling and Caswell Coggins. This is where we got this song - The Sun is Shining.

Alright
Those were the days
Your mother would say you could come out and play
We'd kick things around
Climb up a tree and jump across the canal

Then every summer was a year in my head
When it ended, yeah, we wished we were dead
But nowadays it comes and goes before before you noticed

The sun is shining
We've nothing left to loose
The sun is shining
Put on your favorite shoes
Were getting tired
I'm Sick of waiting for you

I've gotta move on
But my heart belongs in a world that has gone
I went to your house
Your mother's still their but she said you moved out
She said you left 11 years ago
She said she told me this before but I dont know
She wont undersatnd if I say that I love you

The sun is shining
Wev'e nothing left to loose
The sun is shining
put on your favorite shoes
Were getting tired
I'm sick of waiting for you

The sun is shining it's gonna be alright
The sun is shining stop putting up a fight
Im getting high so high
We've nothing left to loose
Nothing to loose

(The sun is shining)
We've got nothing to lose
(The sun is shining)
Put on your favourite shoes
(We're getting tired and I'm)
Sick of waiting for you
Waiting for you
(The sun is shining)
Stop putting up a fight
(The sun is shining)
It's gonna be alright
(I'm getting high so high)
We've got nothing to lose
Nothing to lose

Media Literacy

  • Media is a changing process and discipline. Media changes with technology.
  • The way we study media is always changing.
  • Media makes you sharper - Young media and the disgital culture.
  • The more media literate you are the less patience you have for someone who isn't (Young to Old people)

Old Media; Normal Physical Sport, Monoplay (Board Games), Letters, Home Telephones, Libary.

New Media; The Wi, The playstations (Computer games), Telephones, Mobile Phones, Google (The Internet)

  • "Moving from AS to A2 it is vital that you undertsand the difference between using and making emdia and being media literate. Your friends that are not doing media maybe able to post something on You Tube, but as a A2 student you should be able to; observe a set of conventions, informed and research based mode of address for audience. theorise your own media creativity and exsititng commerical media texts and products, academic ideas as post mordernism, democracy, representation and disclosure."

The old school style of literacy says its something you do or don't have, however technology has changed the concept.

  • Freires (1972); Who has more power?

People who are not literate (cannot read or write) or those who are literate (can read or write)

Gordon Brown has stated that forgein people that live or are going to live here in england or are claiming benefits in the UK should learn to read, write and speak english in order to integrate into the host society.

Literacy

Freire Gordon Brown

Social Change

Empower (media literacy empowering) Obligertary

Censorship

Censorship; Self Regualted, Empowerment, Social Justice (waht gives the right to say I can't see it)

  • James Gee's (2007)

Several Literacy's - 'meta-understanding'

The several literacy's are used at all different times (the right literacy at the correct time)

Powerful Literacy - you can have many literacy's and we should be able to go from one to another (literacy) without even thinking about it.

James Gee suggest we have serval literacy; ie- understanding football talk and then switching to formal work talk (be able to understand both seperately and together)

Meta-understanding = More understanding of literacy.

Digital Literacy;

The digital divide is those who have sccess to digital literacy and those who don't (Social Justice Arguement)

You Tube, Facebook, MP3's and Google are all cultural development that are arising from the technological change.

The more digital literacy the less of the digital divide.

The trouble with digital literacy's is that it is hard to define and vague.

A meme is a popular term for describing the rapid uptake and spread of a particular idea presented as a written text, image, language 'more' or some other unit of cultural stuff. A thing that goes around (a few people start on facebook, now everyone has facebook)

  • Dawkin's (2006)

For our own survival instinct.

Viral Marketing = Ideas spread through culture (a pizza email is sent to 4 people they send the email to another 4 people and it continues.) Pizza express is a good example of this.

Similar to the 70's of passing a joke around. Viral Marketing
